The four Evangelists, Matthew, Mark , Luke and John enjoy particular honor in our Church, because they were tasked with writing the four Gospels, which are the four pillars on which are Christian faith is supported, together with the other books of the New Testament and our sacred Tradition. Luke the Evangelist, a scientist and artist Saint (W. J. Lillie)

Saint Luke the Evangelist came from Antioch the Great in Syria, was a doctor by profession and an excellent artist. At the time of the Emperor Claudius, he was in Thebes, Boeotia, practising medicine. It was here that he met Saint Paul and, after he had come to believe in Christ he abandoned idolatry, the folly of his ancestors. He also ceased to be concerned with medicine, that is healing bodies, and dedicated himself to preaching the Gospel, in order to bring souls onto the path of salvation and redemption. Apart from oral preaching, Saint Luke also wrote, at Saint Paul’s dictation, the Gospel which bears his name, which he sent to some high official called Theophilos, who also believed in Christ. ...

Evangelist Luke, “the Beloved Physician” (Archbishop Lazar Puhalo)

It has become a commonplace of for critics to suggest doubts about the authorship of Luke’s Gospel and the Book of Acts. Such doubts are, however, clearly unfounded. The evidence is conclusive that both treatises were written by a physician, and Luke was “the beloved physician” (Col. 4:14 ) who wrote them. Both books demonstrate a knowledge of medicine and  in both there are clear signs of medical diction.      It is Luke’s Gospel that gives us a clear picture of Christ as the Divine physician, and redemption as a healing process.
