Vergina: Memorial service at the “Grove of the Missing of the Cyprus Tragedy”

On Wednesday morning, 5 July 2023, at the “Grove of the Missing of the Cyprus Tragedy”, in Vergina Imathia, a commemorative event on the occasion of the 49th anniversary of the coup and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus took place.
At the beginning, His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon of Veria, Naoussa and Campania, conducted a Trisagion Memorial Service for the souls of the fallen, which was followed by greetings from the Mayor of Veria, Mr. Konstantinos Borgiazidis, the President of the Association of Northern-Greek Soldiers of the Greek Defence of Cyprus 1974 Mr. Athanasios Staikos, the President of the Association of Cypriots of the Imathia Prefecture “O Evagoras” Ms. Eleni Psara, the President of the Teaching Federation of Greece, Mr. Athanasios Kikinis, the Vice-President of the Pan-Cypriot Organisation of Greek Teachers, Mr. Apostolos Kouroupatis and the President of the Association of Primary Education Teachers of the Prefecture of Imathia, Ms. Stavroula Michailidou.
Afterwards, the Consul General of the Republic of Cyprus in Thessaloniki, Mr. Konstantinos Polykarpou, delivered a topical speech followed by the laying of wreaths, while the event concluded with the singing of the National Anthem and a short musical program by the choir of the Vergina Association “Aiges” under the direction of the musician Ms. Eleni Anagnostou.
At the event of honour and commemoration, on the occasion of the 49th anniversary of the coup and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the local political and military leaders, as well as teachers participating in the “24th Akritideia” held in Imathia, were also present.
