Στα θυρανοίξια του ορθόδοξου ναού του Αγίου Στεφάνου στην Κωνσταντινούπολη παρέστη σήμερα ο Τούρκος Πρόεδρος Ταγίπ Ερντογάν.

Παρών και ο Βούλγαρος πρωθυπουργός, Μπόικο Μπορίσοφ, καθότι ο μοναδικής ομορφιάς ιερός ναός ανήκει στη βουλγαρική παροικία.

Ο ναός άνοιξε σήμερα εκ νέου τις πύλες του ύστερα από αναστήλωση που διήρκεσε επτά χρόνια και κόστισε 3,5 εκατ. δολάρια.

Πρόκειται για έναν από του πλέον εντυπωσιακούς χριστιανικούς ναούς που διασώζονται ως τις μέρες μας στην Πόλη και θεωρείται “στολίδι” της συνοικίας Μπαλάτ στον Κεράτιο Κόλπο. Ο ναός είναι γνωστός και ως «Σιδερένια Εκκλησία».

Ο ναός γιορτάζει φέτος τα 120 χρόνια του, καθώς απέκτησε την σημερινή σιδερένια μορφή του το 1898. Συγκεκριμένα, τότε εισήχθησαν από την Αυστρία σιδερένια στοιχεία συνολικού βάρους 500 τόνων.

Ο κ. Ερντογάν δήλωσε ότι η εκκλησία του Αγίου Στεφάνου παραμένει μοναδικό παράδειγμα εκκλησίας με σιδερένιο σκελετό, ενώ πρόσθεσε ότι η εν λόγω εκκλησία συμβάλλει στην ομορφιά και στον πλούτο της Κωνσταντινούπολης, καθώς και ότι αποτελεί το τελευταίο παράδειγμα των προσπαθειών της Τουρκίας για την αποκατάσταση συναγωγών, παρεκκλησιών και εκκλησιών.
